Wedding Attire for Grooms

As we mentioned in our previous blog, "7 Fashion Rules for Grooms", we discussed the importance of grooms having great style and what to consider when selecting your outfit for your big day. In this blog, we will be providing a guide for wedding attire for grooms with Jeffrey Holden. Style Consultant and Co-Owner of J Holden Bespoke.

White Tie

White Tie attire is ultra-formal and it doesn’t mean that the groom has to wear a white tux.  The accessories are going to make or break your fit. A high level of attention to detail is necessary when bringing your best look together. The tuxedo should have tails and a waistcoat should be worn underneath the coat and above the shirt. Usually, a white-tie jacket has peaked lapels and is worn unbuttoned. White gloves are featured too. Traditionally, the tuxedo is finished with a white bow tie but modern grooms are breaking that norm with black bow ties or patterned bow ties.

Black Tie

Black tie is the most common and preferred option for weddings. A black tuxedo displays the classic image of sophistication and confidence. However, other colors such as  When it comes to a black-tie wedding, you can play with the fabrics and textures to enhance your look. Always remember, you’ll be pairing your tux with a black bow tie. It’s also important to know that while modern black-tie events offer different openings of interpretations, when you’re the groom, it’s imperative you wear a tuxedo.

Formal or Black Tie Optional

Black-tie optional weddings have a very versatile dress code. Dark colored suits and tuxedos are the best option for this wedding. Colors such as navy or charcoal grey will provide a look of elegance. Make sure your shirt is white and the tie matches the color of the suit. You should avoid wearing loud, flamboyant colors and patterns. Formal weddings give your guests an opportunity to dress their best. You can either bring out a classic tux or a formal suit.

Cocktail Attire

According to Holden, cocktail attire is about being respectful to the wedding. While its not as formal as the previous dress codes, it requires a high level of polish and style. When it comes to cocktail attire, it sits between business and formal. It doesn’t require a tux. Dark colored suits, black or brown shoes, and stylish accessories are always a great option.

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual Groom Attire

Dressy casual weddings have a much more relaxed dress code. Some grooms don’t even wear ties. Your wardrobe can be a bit more colorful. From the ties to the pocket squares and you can even throw in a pair of sneakers to go with it. You can express yourself differently with the dress casual attire. A tuxedo is usually not worn with this dress code. Its very similar to cocktail attire. A good sports jacket with solid shirt and slacks. No tie.

Casual

A casual dress code does not mean show up in a tee shirt and some jeans. Keep in mind its still a wedding. Even in a casual setting, you should always want to dress well. A nice suit is still an option, but most likely, you won’t need a tie. You can also bring out the nice polos, nice sweaters, and ore casual button downs. No sweatpants.

Destination

When it comes to a destination wedding, the location plays a crucial role. You can create an entire mood around the location. Make sure you have the appropriate fabrics. Blazers, trousers, and/or suits can give a very chic look.  The important factor to remember is you want to be comfortable. You want your groomsmen to comfortable too. Trust me, you do not want to the groomsmen with the sweaty 3-piece suit on the beach.
