Great style, like great love, never goes out of fashion. It is also not exclusive to the bride. As the groom, it’s your big day too! And all eyes will be on you! It’s only right that you’ll want to look your best. Selecting the right outfit is one of the biggest decisions a groom will make. You must consider your personal style, the design of the wedding, etc. In addition, you will want to select an outfit that you’ll love looking back at in photos for years to come. Today, I have put together 7 fashion rules that every groom must follow.

1.    Match the formality of the wedding.

Your attire should be appropriate for your venue and match the overall vibe of the wedding. For example, if your wedding is in the daytime or outdoors, you can wear something that is slightly more casual (light-colored suits with fabrics such as seersucker). If the wedding is taking place in the evening at a beautiful ballroom, a luxury hotel, it’s best to go with a tux or well-tailored suit. If the wedding is even more formal, black tie or white tie tuxedos are essential.

2.    Your attire should coordinate with your bride.

Always remember, your wedding is your opportunity to show your style as a couple. It is imperative that all grooms match the formality of what the bride is wearing. As a fashion-forward planner, this is one of my favorite parts of the planning process. Although, the groom won’t know what the wedding dress looks like, it’ll be up to the planner, the bride and the bride’s family to give him some guidance on color palettes. If the bride is wearing a custom couture gown, a lightweight linen suit will not get the job done. Bring out a tailored, classic black tux. Regarding the colors of the flowers, the groom should match the overall aesthetic of the wedding or coordinate with it. Do not wear a tie in a color that will clash with the bride’s bouquets or your boutonniere.

3.    Compliment your groomsmen fits.

Your wedding day fit should be a combination of coordinating with the bride and the groomsmen. When combined properly, the overall aesthetic is very cohesive and visually appealing. Usually the groomsmen attire is very similar to that of the groom. When done correctly, it produces timeless photos. Just like the picture above.

4.    Custom fit is key.

The most bespoke and expensive tux will and feel very uncomfortable when it doesn’t fit right. It is important to have to plenty of mobility in your tux. You need to be able to raise your arms, do twists and turns, etc. Some grooms like to dance and it would be quite embarrassing to rip your outfit while doing so. Whether you’re renting or buying, most shops will custom tailor your purchase. Remember, this is your day too. And you only have one shot to do it right!

5.    Know Your frame should dictate your outfit.

The key to dressing sharp is dressing for your body type. For example, if you are tall and/or slim, most tuxedos and suits will look good on on your frame. If your frame is a bit bulkier, a double-breasted suit is more fitting. If you’re looking to slim down, try a fitted suit that fits narrowly around the waist to give the impression of a leaner look. Do not wear lighter-colored suits because darker hues are more slimming.

6.   Accessories are your best friend.

Accessories help men bring their personality and individual style into their looks. Statement watches, cufflinks, tie bars can be personalized and are highly sophisticated. Sites such as Etsy, Fein Fein, Ox and Bull Trading, Co., and Brooks Brothers are perfect for the groom that is going for a timeless, polished look. When it comes to boutonnieres, bigger is not always better. Make sure it is resting vertically along with the lapel. And invest in high quality cologne. Tom Ford, Bond No. 9, Dior, and Creed are all excellent choices.

7.   Invest in high quality shoes.

The shoes you wear are the ultimate cherry on top. You need to look good from head to toe. A lot of times, your shoes are by far the most overlooked part of your wedding day outfit. Even though they are  a very important part. It’s going to be a long day. You’ll be moving around a great deal. From taking pictures with everyone to dancing the night away at the reception. Throughout the day, want to be comfortable. Bring an extra pair just in case.  Some of the best wedding shoes for grooms include Christian Louboutin, Dior, Magnanni, Steve Madden, and Del Toro.
